White space, flying space and the breath of the letter

The spaces around and inside letters are not empty. They are where the work breathes, moves and becomes alive.

Space is active

In calligraphy, the area around the letter is not a leftover. It shapes the rhythm, balance and movement of the visible mark.

Beyond mechanical perfection

A technically perfect line can still feel dead if the space around it has no life. The unseen relationship matters.

Flying spaces

Richard’s idea of flying spaces gives language to that living movement: the breath around the letter, the energy between form and silence.
